They had been inseparable, always, totally lovey-dovey and getting on everyone’s nerves with that. There was a time when Ryo would follow Kame secretly when the latter had given him a sign, pretending to help him with work, while in reality they had just waited to be alone to jump each other. Ryo was passionate. Kame too. There was something between them that made their relationship work, though they were both so similar. At one point Kame had been able to finish Ryo’s sentences and Ryo knew exactly what Kame wanted to ask from him or tell him. It was almost creepy. And annoying.

They had been living in a pink and soft bubble, living in their own little perfect world. Once. Because no world was perfect.

Around 20 years ago, in Osaka:

“Ryo, what are you doing outside? It’s freezing cold!”

“Sorry Mom.” Ryo looked at his mother innocently. “I’ve been swearing an oath.” he explained.

His mother smiled a bit. “Together with Inu-chan?” She patted the dog’s head, which Ryo had given the name ‘Inu’ to.

“In reality Inu is a prince.” Ryo explained.

“And why is he living with us then?” his mother wanted to know.

“Because he was cursed.”

“Ah.” She smiled. “I see. And what did you swear to do?”

“Mom…” Ryo rolled his eyes. “That’s a secret!”

“Come one, Ryo.” She tousled his hair. “Give me a hint.”

He smiled secretively. “It’s about love.” he told her proudly.

His mother blinked at that. “Love? Ryo, you are 7…”

“And?” Ryo pouted. “Love is not bound to age and gender.”

His mother blinked, then she sighed. “Really, honey, you shouldn’t listen to your brother’s love stories all the time. He isn’t half as experienced as he makes you believe he is.”

Ryo didn’t say anything to that, he merely nodded his head half-heartedly. But when he followed his mother into the house, he twinkled towards Inu-chan. It was true, definitely. Inu was a prince and he, Ryo, had sworn to him to never let go of his true love.

At the same time, in Toyko:

“Kazuya! Did you lose your mind!? Get out of the water, now! It’s freezing cold…”

Kame pouted a bit. “Sorry Mom.”

She wrapped a huge towel around him, trying to warm him up. “What were you doing there anyway?”

“Searching for a fish.” Kame explained immediately.

“A fish?” his mother blinked. “What for, dear?”

“Neko-chan and I are making a pact.“ Kame told her wisely.

She sighed a bit, looking at the cat that was lying on the window sill, eyeing the scene lazily. “With Neko-chan?”

“Yes.” Kame nodded his head. “You know…” he lowered his voice a bit, looking at his mother insistently. “In reality she is a princess…”

“A princess?” his mother sounded amused. “And why is the princess lying on the window sill and living with us as a pet?”

Kame rolled his eyes. “That’s because she was cursed, of course.”

“Of course.” His mother sighed. “And what kind of pact did you make?”

Kame pouted. “Secret. I’m not allowed to talk about it. But it’s important…” he looked at his mother insistently. "...because it’s about love.”

“Love?” his mother asked in serious confusion.

“Yes, there is nothing more important than the never-ending suffering of love.”

His mother looked at her 6-year old son in disbelief. Never ending suffering of love? She sighed deeply. “Really Kazuya, you shouldn’t let your sister tell you about her romance novels all the time. They are nonsense, really…”

“Hm.” Kame nodded his head half-heartedly, but when he followed his mother into the house, he looked at Neko-chan insistently. It was a pact! No one could break it. And if he ever let go of his one and only love, he would…

Today

Ryo rubbed his temples, trying to chase away the headache that was bothering him right now. His eyes were looking tired and helpless. “It’s not working anymore…” he sighed tiredly. “I don’t know why… but at the moment everything is so frustrating!”

“What!?” Kame glared. “You want to run away from this now?”

“That’s not what I’m saying!” Ryo blurt out angrily. “You are not listening – again! I said that we are having serious troubles. Or do you think everything is good at the moment?”

“Maybe not good…” Kame frowned. “But maybe if we try harder…”

“We are trying since half a year now.” Ryo argued.

“Yes, but you were not really into this. You didn’t try hard at all.” Kame complained, glaring at his lover.  “You are just doing this here totally half-assed!”

“EH? Did you just really say that!?” Ryo stared at Kame in utter anger. “I’m trying. I WAS trying. But you are just such a freaking control freak…”

“I’m not a control freak!!”

“Every night before you go to bed you have to check on our ingredients in the fridge, you always want to know every detail of my day, you can’t stand it to loose – not even once. Every time we play a computer game together I’m losing on purpose because you just can’t let go! But it’s not just about me, it’s about every aspect in your life” Ryo crossed his arms in front of his body. “You are a control freak and no matter how often we already talked about this, you never changed anything.”

Kame frowned at that, his eyes sparkling in fury. “How dare you complaining about all that. I might be controlling, but you are the biggest workaholic I know. It’s only work, until you faint. Sometimes it feels like you are together with your work, not with me.” He crossed his arms in front of his body. “At the same time you complain about me!? I can’t change what I am!”

Ryo frowned. “But at the same time you want me to change what I am? Where is the logic behind that?”

Kame sighed tiredly, wondering when exactly it had started to become like that. Difficult and frustrating. “You said you loved me.”

“Yes, I said that.” Ryo rubbed over his head, trying to fight his headache.

“Now you don’t love me anymore?” Kame wanted to know, not able to hide his shaking voice.

“No.” Ryo shook his head. “I do love you. Still. But I don’t know anymore what I want… I…” he bit his lips. “I can’t see it anymore.”

“It?”

“Us.” Ryo made it clear. “Can you still see it? I mean… us?”

“Probably not.” Kame admitted silently.

For a moment Ryo looked almost shocked. As if Kame admitting that their relationship was breaking apart would make it even worse. It did make it worse… because it made it real. Their relationship was breaking apart, there was no doubting it.

“Okay…” Ryo tried to hold back his tears. “I will leave, okay?”

Kame bit down on his lips, feeling how his throat was burning almost painfully. “Yes…” he answered silently, his eyes never leaving Ryo’s back. He wanted to lean on to this back and to hug the other, but it was impossible.

“Bye Kazuya.” Ryo showed Kame a last smile. “I really loved you. I still do.”

“Me too.”

For a moment they looked at each other, feeling that this was their last chance to step towards each other again. Only one little step. Each of them waited for the other to do it... but nothing happened. After a while Ryo turned around, reaching out his hand to open the door.

Then it happened…

A white hurricane was engulfing them. Kame felt how he was pushed against the wall by an unknown force. He squealed and screamed, somewhere next to him he could also hear Ryo screaming and struggling.

Then it was over again.

For a moment Kame looked around in confusion, eyeing their strange surroundings. An ancient castle? In the middle of a dreamy landscape. At one point he was sure that he could even see a faery. WHAT THE HELL!?

Ryo looked around nervously. “Where the hell are we?” His eyes widened when he suddenly saw a beautiful male faery approaching them, swirling around them and tugging at their hair playfully. “What…” he pressed out. “Is this a dream…”

The faery pouted a bit. “Can’t you remember Ryo-chan?”

Ryo stared at the male faery in shock, his gaze shifting to Kame whose expression was something between terrified and disbelieving. “I…”

“It’s me! Inu!”

Ryo stared at the little being in disbelief. “Inu? Like my dog Inu-chan…”

“YES! You remember.” The faery chirped, poking Ryo’s forehead and snuggling against his right cheek. “You grew up into a fine young man. Back then you were my only friend. Since then I swore to myself that I would help you once you need me…”

“Ehm…” Kame coughed a bit. “What… I mean, who…”

“Oh, right…” Inu nodded his head. “Neko-chan is also somewhere around.” He pointed at Kame. “This whole mess is actually your fault.” He giggled. “You were the one coming up with this curse.”

Ryo frowned out of a sudden. “Curse?” He looked at Kame warily. “What’s going on here?”

Kame shook his head a bit, before his eyes widened in shock.  If I ever let go of my one and only love, I will… Kame gasped in shock. “I will disappear.” He pressed out. “I promised… that when I let this happen, I would disappear from this world.”

“LET WHAT HAPPEN!?” Ryo blurt out, slowly losing his passion. “What kind of curse, Kazu? What do you mean with disappear? AND WHERE THE HELL ARE WE?”

“Your temper is stronger than before.” Inu mused. “But it doesn’t matter, hot-tempered man are attractive. Don’t you worry about that…”

Ryo sighed tiredly, his eyes still looking at the scene in disbelief. Then he faced Kame again. “Kazuya? What’s going on?”

“I promised to Neko-chan…” Kame answered warily.

“Yes.” Inu nodded his head. “Your little friend accidently made a pact.” he explained to Ryo, before he looked at Kame in pity. “Neko-chan was very worried about you… She kept watching you all the time.”

“What’s going to happen now?” Kame asked silently.

Inu grinned mischievously. “Be glad that I’m around. You know…” he chuckled. “I’m a prince. And I’m a wish-faery.”

“FOR REAL?” Ryo asked in surprise, remembering the things he had made up as a child when he had found the little dog. As an innocent and naïve child he had been able to realize that something was different with Inu. He wasn’t a normal dog. So all the things he had dreamed of, they were true?

“Yes.” Inu nodded his head. “Once Neko-chan told me about Kazuya’s pact I decided to change it a bit.”

“Change it?” Kame asked, suddenly sounding hopeful.

“Yes.” Another faery suddenly intervened, a female one. She swirled around Kame, before she sat down on his shoulder. “I won’t let it happen. You were my only friend after all…”

Kame looked at the little being in surprise. “Neko-chan?” he asked silently.

“Yes, that’s me.” She smiled, before she frowned slightly. “You could have thought of another name for me though… But however, naming me, saved me.”

“What do you mean with that?”

“Inu and I had been cursed. He is a prince after all and this country is his. He had many enemies and I was his fiancée. So they tried to get rid of us by turning us into animals. You two found us and named us… and became our friends. So… you saved us and broke the curse.”

“Unbelievable…” Ryo mumbled in surprise.

“Yes.” Inu smiled happily. “And now we can finally help you.”

“But…how?” Kame wanted to know.

The two faeries merely chuckled. “You will realize soon enough…”

Just like that, without answering any of their questions, without even giving them any hint, the area disappeared again, the light and wind tugging and pulling at them. Kame grabbed Ryo’s hand instinctively to protect him and to feel protected. Then they were suddenly back, in the same rehearsing room where they had met up before.

“What was that?” Ryo asked silently. “I mean…” he looked at Kame piercingly. “What did you promise? What kind of curse is this?”

Kame merely shook his head. “I…” he bit his lips. “I can’t tell you yet.”

Ryo sighed in frustration. “Whatever… “ he looked around a bit. “And now? How do they want to help us?”

“Sh.” Kame pointed at the door. “Someone is coming…”

Ryo nodded his head, leaning back a bit to look as casual as possible. When the door opened, he smiled a bit. It was Hina and Yoko, his band-mates and friends. He waved at them. “Morning, guys!”

But to his surprise there was no answer. He frowned deeply, walking towards them and reaching out his hand to grab Hina’s shoulder. For a moment he gasped, shaking his head in disbelief. He couldn’t. He couldn’t touch Hina. He tried to wrap his arms around Yoko, but it didn’t work either. It was as if he wasn’t existent. As if he was a ghost…

Yoko shivered a bit, little goose-bumps appearing on his arms. “It feels windy today…”

“Did you see Ryo?” Hina asked, without reacting to Yoko’s complaint. “I wanted to meet up with him later.”

“He called in sick five minutes ago.” Yoko explained. “Poor boy…”

For a moment both Kame and Ryo stayed silent in shock, exchanging some glances. “We…” Kame rasped out. “They can’t see us… We are…”

“…invisible?”

Aw, chibi cuteness!!! <3<3<3 So adorable.
LOL! Kame's quote about the never-ending suffering of love. XDDDD They are both totally cute kids. ^^ And with their pets. *melts* :D

Mou, Kame and Ryo's relationship made my heart ache. D: While it doesn't really help to accuse each other, I understand the difficult situation they are in. When the fluffy being in love slowly fades you find yourself confronted with a character that you knew before, but you thought maybe things would change - just that they don't and when you realize that, it's hard to deal with it. It's just like that, when you take a workaholic, that's what you will have and you can't expect the other to change too drastically - you took him like that, after all. It's so difficult. Oh, it makes me T__T

It's interesting about the fairies. Fantasies coming to life. I wonder what's going to happen with Kame and Ryo, now that they can only watch their world. It might be interesting to learn new things.

At the same time it might be difficult, if Ryo and kame are gone, like they disappeared, what are tehir friends and colleagues gonna do? They'll be considerde missing. I hope it won't cause a mess. ^^ And not too angsty. I want fluff. ^^

I'm very curious how the plot is going to develop. There's a lot of potential in it. Thanks a lot for sharing this, AU is always a huge amount of work.

Ohhhhhhh Kame and ryo are so cute as kids. ^^ They swore to treasure their love. Neko-chan and Inu-chan are really a help here. ^^

So they are invisible now. *lol* The will have a lot of fun I guess. ^^

I hope they can manage it find the love for each other again. It's sad that they ended up like this here. Maybe they have the total daily routine in their love life and everything is annoying for them now. I really hope they manage it. In the end they still love each other, right?!

I am really looking forward to the next chapter, thanks for sharing the first one of this. *hugs*

that part with them as kids could have been left all by its lonesome and been so beautiful... the part after would have left it angsty... but noooo you just had to add stuff to make it fun! lol. i love it.

i feel like i read some sort of rigoletto thing with the faeries!

ooh i cant wait for the rest *runs to read next chapter*
