Tokyo, 1981: A young bride disappears, leaving no trace but an old necklace out of jade. No one has seen her, no one knows who she is. The woman that never existed.
Tokyo, 2011: Jin, a talented photographer, is known for his sixth sense when it’s about photos and other person’s emotions. When he gets the offer to work with Tokyo’s Criminal Investigation Department, he moves to Tokyo, together with his 16-year-old brother.
There he starts to work together with the skilled, but eccentric young detective Kamenashi Kazuya. They are part of the department for Cold Cases, where forgotten and never solved cases are investigated again. Despite their first rather bad impression of each other, they soon learn that their skills complement each other almost perfectly.
The case they are working on seems mysterious, but harmless: Jade, the woman that had been erased from everyone's memory. But soon Jin and Kame realize that with this case they are awakening a sleeping lion, bringing themselves and everyone they love and care for into danger. They suddenly fall into a network of intrigues, murders and threats. On top of that they are both hiding something from each other and from everyone else... something no one is supposed to know...
A/N: This is dedicated to estemarie, because she wanted this update so much <3

Jin stared at the empty place in front of him in disbelief. Where the heck was Kame? His eyes started to twitch in desperation, hands trembling slightly. But before he could start running and yelling, he heard Kame’s voice again

“Jin?” he called out, his voice coming from under the earth, sounding rather embarrassed than scared or desperate. “You called me Kazuya…”

Jin blinked in surprise, blushing out of a sudden when he realized that Kame was apparently alright and that he had called him in such an intimate way out of worry. Then he grinned suddenly. “You called me Jin.”

“You called me Kazuya first.” Kame complained.

Jin chuckled, smiling a bit. “So…is it okay?”

“Yes…” Kame’s voice sounded shaky and Jin had to smile brightly at that, imagining the other’s blushed face. When he thought about Kame’s face, it brought him directly back to reality. “Wait… where are you!?”

“Right in front of you.” Kame explained. “Be careful. I broke through the ground…”

Jin grew pale. “Are you alright?”

“Yes, don’t worry. Just be careful, please.”

Jin nodded his head, carefully walking into Kame’s direction, until he was standing in front of a small hole in the ground, just big enough for a person to drop into it. When he looked into it, his eyes widened in surprise. “I can’t believe that.” He gasped.

“I know.” Kame mumbled, eyes twitching a bit. He was at the ground of an apparently secret path, something that was obviously leading to something important. “Jin, I can see it…” Kame sounded seriously excited. “There is a room.” When he saw how Jin was about to jump down too, he shook his head. “Wait, there is another way out. I’ll search the right way and pick you up, okay?”

Jin nodded his head, sitting down right next to the hole and waited for Kame to appear. It took Kame only 10 minutes, then he was standing right in front of Jin. He smiled brightly, placing his hands on Jin’s shoulder and pressing his lips against the other’s forehead. “We found it! Finally we found something!” He took Jin’s hand, pulling him along to the right entrance. It was hidden well behind huge bushes, almost impossible to get through without being scratched. Then there was a small door, leading to the secret path… and to an office.

When Jin was standing in the room he couldn’t believe it. It wasn’t that huge or that important for the professor’s academic work. But there were things standing around, folders. And right in front of them on the table, there was it. A folder with names, the jade woman’s photo on top of it and a letter.

“You have to read it.” Kame said silently.

Dear unknown police officers,

I know by now that you will search for me and find me soon. I know that if you find me, I won’t be able to stay quiet anymore. And that talking to you directly won’t only bring me but my whole family into danger. I left the newspaper out of that reason…and because I was never able to say the truth. And that’s what the newspaper is actually here for, right? It’s a place where people are supposed to tell the truth and reveal things. I wasn’t able to fulfil this purpose. I failed.

This case has always bothered me. Should I have shown more courage, tell the police what I really know?

My only excuse is that I wanted to protect my family. But here I gathered everything I know. I prepared it for you at the day you were meeting Erika-chan. When you find this, I’ll be dead already. It’s the best like that. When I’m dead, no one will bother my family anymore. This is how important this case is.

In the folder there is a list with the newspaper’s photographers, I cut them down to three. I’m sure one of these three made the photo. I can’t remember correctly anymore, there were too many photographers working for me. But these three were together with me when we saw the woman.

I would appreciate it if you found a way to avoid asking these men… It might also bring their life out of order. So if it’s possible, please let them live peacefully and don’t bother them. I organized everything for you:

In the envelope you’ll find some negative photos of the original picture and of the other shots we made at that day. You need to develop these negatives of course.

And there is something else. The last sheet of paper includes a number: It’s the number of the car that drove through our city that night.

They also came to me… a man, in a dark coat, I didn’t see his face, but I think I knew whom he was connected to. They told me to stay quiet. If not my family would be in danger. They told the same things many other people in our little city. They threatened a whole town.

This is all I know. I promise. I knew you would find this place, because I marked it on the map for you.

Good luck to you guys. I hope you’ll find the woman.

I’m sorry for being useless till now, but now…I couldn’t hold back anymore. Please solve this case, also for my sake!

Yamamoto Kei

Yuu was rushing through the area around Jin’s house, searching for Ryo like crazy. Where was the boy? Damn!! And this though Jin had just told him to be particularly careful. How could it have slipped his attention that Ryo was gone?

Yuu sighed. He didn’t believe that something happened to Ryo. He for sure sneaked out of the house. But the situation outside seemed to be dangerous. And Ryo was no where around. Yuu had tried to call several of Ryo’s friends, but when he didn’t have any success, he knew that there was no other way than to tell Jin… and prepare for the up-coming catastrophe. He wished he could avoid that. He wished he had been more careful before and talked to Ryo immediately. If Ryo had known more details, he for sure wouldn’t have left like that… But like that, he felt hurt and misunderstood and reacted like everyone else would do in his situation.

But before he would call Jin, Yuu dialled someone else’s number. Ueda was a friend of them after all and he would be able to search for Ryo while Jin and Kame were too far away at the moment.

When he had finished that, he sighed, reluctantly dialling Jin’s number…

******

Jin and Kame were sitting on the balcony of their hotel room, still stunned by what had happened.

“I can’t believe that…” Jin mumbled.

“Me neither.” Kame shook his head. “He particularly set this trace for us.”

“So it was suicide after all.” Jin mused.

Kame nodded his head. He had already expected it, but he wasn’t able to tell anyone. People would have asked how he knew it… and it would have forced him to reveal too much about his own person and his secrets. He needed to keep them as a secret as long as possible. Especially in front of Jin. He should never know what and who he really was.

“You know…” Kame mused after a while. “Something about this letter is strange. I don’t know what it is yet… but something…” He sighed. “I need to go through it again when we are at home.” He smiled a bit. “What about the negative images?”

Jin stretched tiredly. “It’s the first thing I’ll do at home. I honestly can’t wait...” He had actually meant to say more, but before he could do that his phone rang. When Jin knew that it was Yuu calling him, his stomach started to twitch nervously. It was just a feeling, a bad feeling…

“Hey Jin…”

“For God’s sake.” Kame huffed. “Stay calm. I’m driving as fast as possible. And Ueda-kun is already searching for him too.”

“You don’t understand.” Jin pressed out. “He is everything I have. If something happens to him…”

“He is alright.” Kame said firmly to reassure both him and Jin. “He is a 16-year old teenager who feels misunderstood by his older brother. He only ran away. Yuu said his bag is missing... so I'm sure we’ll find him!” He was surprised himself how convincing he sounded and how important this was for him too. Two hours later they were stopping in front of Jin’s house and Jin almost jumped out of the car before it had stopped. Kame pulled the handbreak before he followed Jin. In the house they met an already totally worked up and worried Yuu.

“I’m so sorry Jin!! He disappeared before I could talk to him…” Yuu blurt out immediately. “I searched everywhere…

Jin brushed through his hair. “He is so stupid. Such a stupid boy. Where is he!?”

Kame grabbed his keys again, nodding firmly. “I’ll go and search for him too. Don’t worry too much Jin. We’ll find him. I promise! Just stay at home, please. It’s too dangerous to lose you too…”

“He is right.” Yuu agreed immediately, nodding firmly. “Let the police do their work. Let’s just do something here… cook something…”

Jin sighed. “But… I mean… Ryo…”

“I know.” Yuu said softly, tugging at Jin’s arm. “Kame-kun will find him. Let’s make something for Ryo to eat, alright? When he comes home, he will for sure be hungry…”

“Okay…” Jin agreed reluctantly, his stomach jumping painfully at the thought that he couldn’t go and search for Ryo as well. He couldn’t be there for his stupid little brother.

“Didn’t you find this new recipe last week… the on you wanted to try as soon as possible?” Yuu tried to distract his friend.

“Yes.” Jin admitted half-heartedly. “Beef tortillas….”

******

“Hey Ryo-chan…” Uchi rested his head in Ryo’s lap, looking up at the stars. “Don’t you want to go home?”

“No.” Ryo mumbled. “I hate my brother at the moment…”

“He seemed to be so nice.” Uchi agreed. “Now he is so strange.” He smiled a bit, sitting up again and grabbing Ryo’s face, holding it in his hands tenderly. “I’ll be always there for you, okay? I promise.”

Ryo smiled warmly at that, his cheeks flushing a bit when he could feel Uchi’s lips against his. It was a short and unsure kiss, but it was wonderful. As wonderful as it could be at that moment where Ryo’s thoughts were still so gloomy and confused. He wished so much for his brother’s warmth again, but since weeks Jin was already so tensed and cold and impossible… When did he start hating him like that?

Ryo sighed, lying down next to Uchi on the blanket and snuggling against him. He could feel Uchi’s arms around his waist, pulling him closer. They both fell asleep like that…

Kame had already felt quite desperate while he was searching for Ryo. He had to find him. He couldn’t return home without him… it was impossible. He couldn’t do that to Jin. Not after everything that had happened. Not after all the things he was hiding from Jin… He HAD TO find his little brother.

His eyes were already so tired that he almost missed it… the shadows on the little field close to Ryo’s school. Kame almost cried in relief when he saw it. And at the same time he had to smile. In the end Ryo hadn’t been able to hide for real… he couldn’t do that to Jin. He had stayed at a place where someone would look for him.

So Kame was not really surprised when he woke Ryo up softly and the latter wasn’t really shocked by his appearance.

“Oh dear…” Kame sighed out in relief. “I’m so glad.”

Ryo didn’t say anything, he just looked at Kame warily, not sure what to say, but Kame merely smiled. “It’s okay. I already called your brother. He is waiting at home… I’ll bring the both of you home again, alright? Just wake up your sleepy little friend here.”

Ryo nodded his head, waiting until Kame was sitting in his car again before he was shaking Uchi’s shoulder softly. “Hiroki?”

Uchi looked at Ryo tiredly, grumpy that someone was waking him up. “What…?”

“They found us.” Ryo explained carefully. “We have to go…”

“Your brother is here?” Uchi asked in surprise, trying to grasp everything.

“No” Ryo mumbled.

“Eh?” Uchi blinked. “If they found us, I thought he would be the first.”

Ryo shrugged helplessly, looking almost scared. “He is sending me a message with that. That he is waiting for me to come home, because he knows where I am, so that it will drive me nuts until I face him… because I already know that I’m in huge troubles.”

“That’s not really a peaceful message.” Uchi complained. “Besides that it’s a long one too…”

Against his intention Ryo had to smile at Uchi’s simple comment. He stroked over the other’s cheek a bit. “I guess we have to go…”

“Yes… I guess…” Uchi gave in half-heartedly, before he followed Ryo. He grabbed his friend’s hand. “It will be alright. You and your brother will make up again. I’m sure about that.”

Ryo didn’t say anything to that. He had never had much faith in people and he had also lost it in his relationship with his brother. There were too many things out of order right now.

When Kame had dropped Uchi at his home, Ryo started to feel nervous. And Kame wasn’t exactly the kind of person who was able to reassure someone. Ryo frowned a bit. Okay, maybe this Kame was quite nice, but he was also a bit weird. Really… his brother had a strange taste. Though he was pretty… and nice, he just seemed to be lost sometimes. Why was Kame lost? And so silent and nervous? Was he hiding something?

“You are together with my brother now?” Ryo asked curiously, trying to find something they could talk about.

Kame blushed so deeply at that, that Ryo didn’t need an answer. Still Kame felt like saying something, anything. “Is it okay?” he stuttered.

“It’s Jin’s relationship…So, of course it’s okay.” Ryo mused, smiling a bit. “I kinda like you.”

Kame sighed in relief, glad that he didn’t get into a huge discussion here. “You want me to come in too?” he asked when he stopped in front of Jin’s house.

Ryo shook his head. That was actually the last thing he needed. “No, thanks.” He smiled a bit. “Thanks Kame-kun. You are a good guy…I guess my brother was lucky to find you.” He slipped out of the car, sighing a bit when he realized that Kame was waiting for him to go into the house before he drove away.

Ryo looked at the windows, realizing that it was dark everywhere, except in the living room. So Yuu was sleeping already… He felt sorry for worrying Yuu. The latter had been so nice and caring and for sure was feeling worried and guilty for losing Ryo…

Ryo sighed, he would apologize to Yuu. But he would definitely not apologize to Jin in any way. Jin was unfair. Since weeks he was already a total idiot.

Ryo wasn’t really surprised when he found Jin sitting in the living room, waiting for him. “Hey…” he mumbled.

Jin blinked at that cold attitude, glaring at Ryo. “That’s all!?”

“Well…” Ryo shrugged, actually feeling a bit helpless. “I’m not sure what to say…”

“You sneaked out of the house, just like that… I didn’t even have a clue where you were. You know how dangerous it is outside!! How stupid are you!” Jin’s eyes were sparkling furiously, his feet trembling a bit when he thought about what might have happened to his brother.

“You grounded me without any reason!” Ryo argued, feeling both angry and disappointed. “You didn’t even pick me up tonight! You don’t care at all…”

Ryo gasped in shock when Jin raised his hand, cracking it across his face. He flinched at the pain and stumbled a bit at the impact, looking at his brother in surprise and anger. For a moment Jin wondered if he would ever forget this look in his brother’s eyes. Before he could say anything, Ryo had already turned around, glaring at Jin once more before he disappeared into his room.

Jin clenched his hands, before he rubbed over his face. The hand he had hit Ryo with was shivering slightly. “Damn.” He breathed out in despair. “Jin, you idiot!” He bit his lips, wondering what he should do now, before he curled his nose, the clear scent of something burnt reaching him. “MY EXTRA-CHEESY-BEEF TORTILLAS!!!!”

A/N: So honestly, who thought that something horrible happened with Ryo or Kame? ^_^
It's too early for that... *hint* But I can promise you lots of exciting stuff to come up in the next chapters.

Oh god....so much is going on here. So Jin and Kame found an important hint. And luckily Kame isn't missing (till now...) Jin was really worried about it, right? He really seem to have feelings for Kame, who on the other side seems to like Jin. But I am excited how it will work out, especially because Kame has a secret, right?
Kame knows that someone is following him, and he knows it's connected with Jin worry about Ryo. I am wondering if Kame's father has something to do with the case. It's just a thought I had, but probably I am totally wrong. ^^

I really feel with Jin, because he only wants the best for Ryo, and I understand Ryo, because he is just a teenager who wants to do what he wants, and he didn't do anything wrong before. ><

Ohhhhh RyoUchi are so cute, and it's so sweet how Kame picks them up. ^^ Ryo really realized soon what's going on with Kame and Jin.
I hope the two of them can manage it to get closer again. In the end they are brothers and they have only each other.
I think Jin should tell Ryo about the letter. It would be easier in the end, and maybe Ryo wouldn't run away and trying to break out again, because he knows why Jin acts like this.

I am really curious what will happen here in the next chapters, you made me more excited. ^^

I totally love the story, it's one of my favorites.

Thanks for sharing it <3 *huuuuuuuugs*

you little piece of a tease. really, i don't know what to feel right now. i was worrying like hell about ryo, you knew that! with kame, i knew he'll be safe. you know, because of the prologue. haha.

anyway...

i think even though they've found yamamoto-sensei's things, it is still not that clear. well, they still would have to deliberate and analyze the stuff. and of course, i wouldn't miss kame's thoughts and all here. he's hinding somethign really intriguing. i'm highly guessing that he's connected to the woman or to the people who did something to that woman. kame, are you that woman's son? maybe he's there at the police cause he wants to find some answer about her death or missing. but certainly, he's connected to something connected to that case.

if he is, though, i wonder if he's telling that to jin. cause i don't think that he'll tell him. i don't know why, though. and i am still puzzled why the two needs to keep their secrets to each other since you know, i think they're dating or something already. i think i'm messing up with the comment but i'm feeling something. there's just something in their setup that makes the mystery more of a mystery.

and hey, ryo noticed that, too! really, ryo, you're bothersome. i think jin will hate himself even more if you get to suffer and find things out before he even does.

i'm glad that jin wasn't angry at yuu, though. ryo's right, he should apologize to the nice man!

ryo and kame, i think, will share something or get to know even more cause i think that ryo can read kame. i just don't know how things wil unfold, though.

so i was right again. this is ryouchi. i thought ryo's not gonna be paired to anyone but it seems that uchi's his sort of a lover here. i hope there's not much of a problem about that. i hope that ryo's friends are actually safe.

i was thinking about ryo's friends. cause ueda- one of the brother's friends- kinda bothers me. i'm not sure and i cannot comprehend if he's somehting genuinely nice or is he playing an important role, here? he's so mysterious and him having so many jobs is really something. i don't think you point that out almost every single time he's in the scene for nothing, right. i wonder if this story would also be about betrayal.

kame's secret is something that is really huge that he has to make up to jin for hiding it. but i'm glad to know if he's genuinely caring about htese two boys. i'm glad he found jin.

i pity ryo . not just because he was grounded for no reason but i think his leaving was sort of a message, too, for his brother. i think he actually wanted jin to pick him up. he mentioned about jin not picking him up, right? but he got too disappointed with his brother's actions. and that's just making everyhting really worse.

congratulations, jin, for being the biggest idiot in town. you have successfully hurt the hell out of your little brother and there're no way he'd actually forgive you this time. seriously, grounding him for no reason? and now, hurting him? sure you have hurt ryo enough. i think you need some anger control management. you're scaring not just ryo but the others, too. if you can't handle these thins pretty well, things will definitely be a lot more dangerous for you especially ryo. you need to do something about this, really.

but well, i honestly understand jin. it's just that, the way he's handling htings aren't right and that's only making things worse. his relaitonship with ryo is going down and the enemies will only use that against him. in the end, if they get ryo and hurt him or something- jin will sitll be the one who's hurt that most.

the last scene was really intense. jin, hurting ryo. and the little one staring at him in disgrace.

but the extra cheesy beef tortillas cracked me up. i mean, jin, you don't think about your cooking when your brother's extremely mad at you, right?

i just hope that ryo loves cheese to death that it was supposd to be a peace offering or something. LOLOLOLOL.

thanks so much, dear for this! i have waiting for this foor so long i felt like drying the moment i saw the update. okay that was an exageration but i was really thrilled! i wonder what happens next. please update soon cause i love this fic to death! :)

*hugs*

I thought something would have happened to Ryo. Thank goodness it didn't. Ryo is perceptive about Kame. Jin is a little clueless. Thanks for updating.

Oh, so good ~
But what do you mean it's too early for something horrible to happen to Ryo or Kame? Please, don't hurt them. Let them be in danger or whatever as long as they come out of it unscathed.
Thank you for this ^^
And Jin and Kame are finally together and now I can't wait to find out the things Kame keep hidden and I want some progress in their relationship and I don't want Ryo and Jin to be fighting, they should care for each other and then I also want to find out what is happening with this Jade woman and everything else and I just can't wait and I want to find out even more and reading more of everything and I just... just... Sorry, ranting on quite a bit there. Basically, I just want you to update soon again. I will be waiting ^^

Hello there! Well my favorite part of this chapter is when Uchi says, "“That’s not really a peaceful message.” Uchi complained. “Besides that it’s a long one too…” Ha Ha I love that part. I love that in this fic of intrigue and suspense there is such an adorable person saying such a thing. And that is why I love your writing--these little touches like beef tortillas. Because isn't that what you remember from nights when you got in trouble when you were young--that someone burnt beef tortillas and you could smell them throughout the whole house?

I think it is sad that man committed suicide to keep his family safe. It was interesting the hidden office and I love how you continually work in ways to bring Akame closer together like the way you had them say their names more intimately. So Kame and Jin have a few more clues to go on now. Kame is awesome the way he finds Ryo and i really like it that he doesn't go inside the house--like he is letting the brothers deal with it themselves. I want to know more about how Kame is involved in the mystery. Can't wait for the next. Thanks for this update!

Hugs, hearts, and pinwheels--I got one today! :D:D:D<3<3<3
