Ohno looked down into the glass of whiskey in his hand, swilling it around nervously. He wondered if he should tell his grandfather that he couldn’t stand the taste of whiskey (Gin, yes. Martini, yes. But whiskey?), but decided it was better to play along. “Hm…”
“Yes?”
Ohno bit his lips, feeling how his fingers were tensing up painfully. “It’s a bit difficult to explain…” he answered warily. He wasn’t exactly afraid of talking to his grandfather, but he wondered if this would turn out well for him… and as a result also for Jun.
Ohno-san chuckled. “Just tell me. It’s alright…”
Ohno took a deep breath, deciding to say it straight-out. This was for Jun after all. “Jun is getting married…”
His grandfather blinked. “Oh. For real? So soon?”
“Yes…” Ohno explained. “It was announced suddenly. He was surprised too…”
Ohno-san frowned. “You’re saying that it’s an arranged marriage?”
“Yes.”
“Okay…” the old man shifted around a bit. “It’s not that unusual, you know? It’s not really that much of a surprise.”
“He doesn’t want to marry.” Ohno intervened carefully.
Ohno-san sighed. “That isn’t much of a surprise either…” He looked at his grandson insistently. “So, where is your place in this story?”
“Eh?”
“Don’t tell me you don’t have anything to do with it?” The man smiled a bit. “I’m old but not stupid.”
Ohno wrapped his fingers around his glass tightly, holding on to it. “I don’t want him to marry.” he finally admitted, looking at his grandfather directly.
His grandfather stayed quiet for a moment, apparently trying to understand what Ohno had just told him. Ohno could actually see it in his grandfather’s face, how the realization was slowly starting to drip in. He gulped at that, removing his gaze as to not look into the other’s eyes. They sat in a long, painful silence. Then Ohno-san coughed. “Do you know what you’re saying?” he asked, his voice not giving away any of his feelings or thoughts.
“Yes.” Ohno nodded his head firmly. “I know what I’m saying.”
“You also know what society thinks about people who don't fit into what they consider as 'normal'?” the man asked further. “I’m not talking about me…” he pointed out of the window. “…but about the world out there. You know that it’s not easy? That it’ll be a difficult path. That people might judge you, and that they won’t understand. That old friends might turn their backs on you once they find out. You could keep it a secret for some time, but one day it will be known to the public. When this happens, will you be strong enough to bear with the consequences?”
Ohno looked at his grandfather in surprise. He hadn’t expected him to be that straightforward and that he would catch up so fast. “I don’t know about Jun, but…”
“Oh.” His grandfather interrupted him, slightly amused. “I know Jun. He is definitely strong enough. He wouldn’t give a damn about those kinds of opinions. He has always been known for being rebellious. He will be able to get through this. But will you too? You should make sure that you’re certain about this.”
Ohno stayed quiet for a moment, before he furrowed his brows. “I know I look somewhat absent-minded most of the time, but I’m not. I’m much stronger than what people think I am.” he answered firmly, determination clear in his voice. “I’m not weak nor am I stupid, and I’m used to strangers judging me or looking down on me. This is nothing for me. I’m strong enough to be at Jun’s side.”
Ohno-san stayed quiet for a moment, before he laughed loudly. “You sound just like your father.” He chuckled. “That is exactly something he would have said.”
“Well… it’s the same genes” Ohno chuckled.
“You want me to help you, right?”
The question took Ohno aback slightly. He had wondered how to ask for his grandfather’s help in settling this matter, only to find that he’d already known about his true intention the moment they had started talking. “Yes.”
“Let’s say…” the man mused. “…I’ll help you, and try my best to get into Matsumoto-san’s stubborn head.” He smirked a bit. “He is very stubborn by the way, just like Jun. But this, on the other hand, will be your problem from now on.” He paused to regain his serious composure. “If I help you, I want you to promise me something…”
Ohno looked at his grandfather both curiously and thankfully. “What do you want? I might promise you anything at the moment!”
Ohno-san blew out the smoke from his cigarette, looking at his grandson directly now. “I want you to forgive me for deserting your father.”
Ohno blinked at that, and he sighed. “I haven’t judged you because of what happened. I know more than you think I know… so I’m not even sure if there is something I should forgive you for. Well, there for sure is, but it’s not that I can’t understand.”
At that the older man blinked before he smiled. “Satoshi, as glad I am to hear that, do you think it is wise to say that?”
“Why not? It’s the truth.”
“That’s not what I meant.” Ohno-san chuckled. “You could have just said yes to our deal without any further explanation and it would have been set into stone. I would have fulfilled my promise. But now… what should we do? We don’t have a deal anymore…”
“I’m not going to lie.” Ohno shrugged. “I hat liars. Why should I fake something like that? I don’t want to pretend and I can’t stand people who pretend. I think being honest is one of the most important things in a relationship between people. In any kind of relationship.”
Ohno-san smiled a bit. “Now you sound like your mother…”
Ohno returned this smile. “I’m sorry.”
“For what?”
“For not being able to give you great-grandchildren.” Ohno explained carefully.
“Oh, forget about that.” His grandfather made a dismissive gesture with his hand. “My daughter, your aunt, has 4 children. One of them hopefully will turn me into a great-grandfather one day.”
Ohno stared at his grand-father in shock. “I have an aunt!?” he finally blurt out.
The man blinked. “Well, yes, of course.”
“I didn’t know that…” Ohno blinked, frowning slightly. What else didn’t he know?
The man smiled. “You will meet her soon. She is coming back to Tokyo with her family to live here. Her husband had a job abroad, but now they’ll come back. He will become my assistant in my company… and I’m really relieved about that. I can slowly let him take over, step by step.”
Ohno looked at the other insistently. “So… you’ll help me?”
“Well…” Ohno-san smirked. “It’s not like I have an option anyway.”

“What about Satoshi-kun?”
Jun smiled slightly. “I will contact him as soon as possible. Once I’ve figured out what I’m going to do and where I’m going to stay. He has the right to know and to decide himself if he wants to hang on to me.”
“You’re surely not going through with this, are you?” Sakura mumbled while she followed Jun through his apartment, watching him gather his things. “Where are you going to live? Couldn’t you… like, stay… and we could try to figure something out?”
Jun sighed, turned around and put his bag on the floor. He hugged his sister tightly. “Listen…” he mumbled against her hair. “I never told you this, but I feel like I should now. When I first heard that you would be going out with Sho, I pretended to be furious about it. But truth is that I was unbelievably happy. Sho is a gorgeous guy and he will treat you with respect and love. Always. I’m so happy that you will marry a guy like him. It’s exactly what I wished for my sister.”
Sakura felt totally paralyzed when Jun left his apartment, leaving her like that. He was her only brother and her best friend. No one could take this pain away from her… to see him leave.
